Kenya is firmly in the grip of its cold season, and the Kenya Meteorological Department has released its Climate Outlook for July 2025, forecasting cool temperatures, cloudy skies, and light rainfall across many regions.
Nairobi, the Central Highlands, parts of the Rift Valley, and surrounding areas will experience significant weather changes, including early morning and evening fog, light drizzle, and daytime temperatures dipping below 20°C. Nighttime temperatures in highland regions may fall below 10°C, prompting health officials to caution the public about a potential rise in respiratory illnesses. Residents are advised to dress warmly and ensure proper home ventilation.
The forecast also indicates near to above-normal rainfall in key regions such as the Lake Victoria Basin, western and eastern Highlands of the Rift Valley including Nyandarua and Laikipia along with parts of the Central and Southern Rift Valley and Northwestern Kenya. These favorable conditions are expected to benefit farmers, especially in western Kenya, where crops stand to thrive.
Conversely, the Northeastern and Southeastern lowlands counties like Mandera, Garissa, Kitui, and Makueni will continue to experience dry, sunny weather. Though mostly dry, these areas may experience brief cloudiness around hilly or mountainous terrain. The continued dry spell in these regions could exacerbate water scarcity, prompting authorities to urge residents to conserve water.
Transport could also be impacted by the chilly conditions. Fog is expected to reduce visibility, particularly along stretches such as Kikuyu–Kinungi and at major airports including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously in low-visibility conditions.
Despite the challenges, the outlook offers opportunities. Wetter highland areas provide ideal conditions for tree planting initiatives, while farmers in the west may benefit from a productive cropping season.
