The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry has appointed Edward Maina Muriuki as the Acting Director of Meteorological Services at the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD). Muriuki assumes the role following the retirement of Dr. David Gikungu on July 28, 2025.
The appointment was confirmed by Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno, the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Environment and Climate Change. Muriuki brings with him more than 30 years of experience in meteorological services, having served in multiple senior roles within the department since joining in 1991.
Throughout his career, Muriuki has held key positions, including Senior Assistant Director, Deputy Director for Technical and Support Services, and Deputy Director in charge of Forecasting Services. He also led capacity-building efforts as principal of the World Meteorological Organization/Regional Training Centre at the Institute for Meteorological Training and Research in Nairobi.
In his statement following the appointment, Muriuki expressed gratitude and optimism. “This appointment marks a significant milestone in my career as a meteorologist, and I look forward to enhancing the science of Meteorology and Hydrology in Kenya,” he said. “I am committed to working closely with KMD staff and partners to improve weather and climate service delivery across the country.”
Muriuki’s academic background includes a Master of Science in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam, a Postgraduate Diploma in Hydrology, and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Meteorology from the University of Nairobi.
His leadership comes at a time when the importance of accurate and timely weather information is increasingly recognized, especially in the face of climate change. The department is set to play a key role in advancing the United Nations’ “Early Warning for All” initiative in Kenya, aimed at ensuring every citizen is protected by early warning systems by 2027.
The ministry congratulated Muriuki on his appointment, noting that his expertise is expected to steer KMD toward enhanced service delivery, contributing to the safety of lives, protection of property, and environmental conservation.
