More than 100 families have been left homeless in Ndabibi, Naivasha, after flash floods swept through the area on Monday night, submerging homes, schools, and shopping centers. The devastating floods were triggered by heavy rainfall in the nearby Eburru Forest, which unleashed torrents of water into surrounding villages, catching residents off guard.
The floods wreaked havoc across the region, washing away property, livestock, and harvested crops. Farmland was left underwater, and major roads were rendered impassable, cutting off access to schools and workplaces for thousands. Former area Member of County Assembly (MCA), Gathariki Kamanu, blamed the extent of the damage on clogged and poorly maintained waterways, warning of further destruction unless urgent intervention is taken.
“There are more than 2,000 school-going children and flower farm workers who are now unable to access schools and their workplaces due to flooded and damaged roads,” Kamanu stated. He also noted that even properties owned by high-profile individuals, including a farm belonging to President William Ruto, had not been spared by the floods.
The impact on local agriculture and livelihoods has been severe. Salim Narokora, a local farmer, described the situation as heartbreaking, saying, “Very little was salvaged. Livestock and harvested crops were all swept away. We are in urgent need of help.”
Schools and several flower farms have reported extensive damage, adding to the economic toll on the community. The continued rains in the Eburru hills have raised fears of further flooding, especially if drainage systems remain unaddressed. Local cleric Joseph Esokon voiced concerns that a tragedy similar to recent floods in nearby Mai Mahiu could unfold if preventive measures aren’t taken immediately.
Authorities have yet to report any casualties, but with weather forecasts predicting more rainfall, residents remain on high alert. Emergency response teams are being urged to act swiftly to assess the full extent of the damage, provide shelter and aid to displaced families, and implement flood mitigation measures to protect vulnerable areas from future disasters.
