The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a public weather alert warning of heavy rainfall expected in several regions between Friday, October 3, and Sunday, October 5, 2025.
According to the department, rainfall currently affecting parts of the country will intensify in both amount and coverage during this period. Areas likely to be impacted include the Central Highlands particularly Nairobi the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Western, and North-Western regions.
KMD’s alert highlights the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall of 20mm to 50mm within 24 hours, with some locations experiencing more than 50mm in a day. Such intense rainfall may result in localized flooding, slippery roads, and disruptions to daily activities.
Public Advised to Stay Vigilant
Residents and travelers have been urged to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Motorists are advised to drive carefully due to reduced visibility and slippery conditions, while pedestrians should avoid flooded walkways and open drains.
In rural areas, heavy rains could temporarily affect accessibility on unpaved roads and disrupt harvesting activities. County governments and disaster response teams have been encouraged to stay on high alert.
Start of the Short Rains
October traditionally marks the onset of Kenya’s short rains season, which runs through December. While the rains are crucial for agriculture and water resources, they often bring risks such as flash floods and landslides in highland and deforested regions.
The Coastal region may also experience occasional rainfall, potentially affecting ferry operations, urban drainage, and low-lying settlements in Mombasa, Kilifi, and Lamu. In contrast, much of North-Eastern Kenya, including Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera, is expected to remain dry.
The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to monitor weather patterns and will issue updates through official platforms. The public is urged to rely on these bulletins for accurate and timely information.
