The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has warned that the ongoing heavy rains experienced in several parts of the country will persist over the coming days. In its latest weather update for Sunday, October 5, 2025, the agency said that rainfall will continue across the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coastal region, and the Rift Valley.
KMD cautioned residents to remain vigilant, advising them to avoid crossing moving water and to stay indoors during thunderstorms. The department also noted that strong winds accompanying the rains could cause damage to trees, power lines, and weak structures.
Earlier this week, the Met Department issued a Yellow Warning, indicating that heavy rainfall of between 20 and 50 millimetres and in some areas exceeding 50 millimetres within 24 hours was expected from Friday, October 3, to Sunday, October 5. The agency warned that these conditions could result in localised flooding, reduced visibility on roads, and difficult driving conditions.
Residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been urged to move to safer ground to avoid being caught up in rising water levels. The department also advised against sheltering under trees or near power lines during thunderstorms, as these pose serious safety risks.
Additionally, KMD cautioned fishermen and small boat operators along the coast and Lake Victoria Basin to exercise extra caution due to gusty winds and rough waters.
While the rains bring relief to regions that had been facing dry spells, authorities have stressed the need for continued preparedness. Kenyans are urged to remain alert and follow weather updates as the situation evolves to minimize the impact of potential flooding and related disruptions.
