The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts across multiple regions as parts of eastern, northeastern, and central India brace for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and squally winds starting October 31.
Heavy Rainfall Expected in Eastern and Northeastern States
According to the IMD, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, and Odisha are expected to experience “heavy to very heavy rain” accompanied by lightning and localized storms over the coming days. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant as the risk of flash floods, landslides, and traffic disruptions increases in vulnerable areas.
Coastal Regions Brace for Strong Winds
Along India’s western coastline, coastal Gujarat and the Konkan region are expected to face squally winds ranging between 35–55 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 65 km/h offshore. The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea until weather conditions stabilize.
Low-Pressure System Over Bay of Bengal
The IMD attributed the turbulent conditions to an active low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, interacting with moisture-laden westerly winds. This atmospheric combination is enhancing instability and driving widespread precipitation across large parts of the subcontinent.
Preparedness and Safety Measures
Authorities in the affected states have activated disaster response teams and issued public safety advisories to mitigate the potential impact of the storms. Citizens and travelers are being urged to monitor local weather updates closely and exercise caution, especially in low-lying and hilly regions prone to flooding and landslides.
Impact on Travel and Daily Activities
As the weather system intensifies, disruptions to travel, transport, and outdoor activities are likely. The IMD recommends postponing non-essential travel and ensuring emergency preparedness in areas forecasted to receive heavy rainfall.
