The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a severe weather advisory warning of strong winds and large waves expected to impact several regions in the country between June 13 and the morning of June 18. The advisory, signed by Director David Gikungu, indicates the onset of strong southerly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s) from the afternoon of Friday, June 13, with intensification expected over the weekend.
According to the forecast, the winds could strengthen to over 30 knots (15.4 m/s) from Saturday, June 14 through Tuesday, June 17, before subsiding to 25 knots by Wednesday, June 18. Coastal counties, in particular, are also likely to experience high wave activity, with wave heights expected to exceed 2.5 metres on Friday, rising to 2.8 metres over the weekend, and reducing to below 2.4 metres by Wednesday.
Counties expected to be most affected include Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, and Makueni.
Residents in these areas have been urged to take precautionary measures to avoid potential harm. The strong winds pose risks such as uprooted trees, structural damage, reduced visibility, and possible transport and marine activity disruptions. The high waves may affect marine operations, including fishing, ferry transport, and port activities along the Indian Ocean.
“People in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential gale and large waves,” warned Gikungu.
The Meteorological Department emphasized the importance of closely monitoring official weather updates and assured the public that timely information would be provided as the situation unfolds. The advisory has also been shared with key government and emergency response agencies, including the Presidency, relevant ministries, the National Disaster Operations Centre, Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Red Cross, and coastal county governments.
This coordinated alert is meant to enhance preparedness and ensure a rapid response in the event of weather-related emergencies. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through Kenya Met Department’s official communication channels.
