The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall expected across various parts of the country this weekend. The rains are set to affect regions in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coast, and the South-Eastern lowlands.
According to the advisory, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley which include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi counties are expected to experience afternoon and evening showers after sunny or cloudy mornings.
Similarly, in the Lake Victoria Basin and Rift Valley regions, the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, and Uasin Gishu will also receive heavy rainfall. Other affected areas include Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
The South-Eastern lowlands are not spared, with rainfall expected in Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and parts of Tana River County.
Kenya Met cautioned that the rains may lead to flash floods, landslides, and transport disruptions, urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant. The advisory follows recent deadly landslides in Elgeyo Marakwet that killed at least 35 people and left several others injured.
In addition, the department forecasted temperature fluctuations from Friday through Tuesday, with some highland regions experiencing night temperatures as low as 7°C. Counties expected to be coldest include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.
Meanwhile, coastal and northern regions such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo will experience high daytime temperatures of up to 37°C.
Residents are advised to plan their activities carefully and stay updated with weather alerts.
