Residents in several parts of Kenya should brace for chilly nights, rainfall, and strong winds this week, according to the latest forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department. The outlook, covering Tuesday, September 1 to Saturday, September 6, highlights varying weather patterns across different regions.
The Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and much of the Rift Valley are expected to receive showers and cold conditions, especially during the night. Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka counties will experience sunny mornings with showers in the afternoon. Cloudy nights are expected between Tuesday and Thursday, with light showers possible on Friday and Saturday. Temperatures in these areas will range from highs of 28°C to lows of 5°C.
In the Lake Victoria Basin and surrounding counties including Kisumu, Siaya, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Uasin Gishu, Kericho, Bomet, and Nakuru, rainfall is predicted throughout the week. Maximum temperatures will average 29°C, while minimums will drop to around 8°C.
Counties in the southeastern lowlands such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta are expected to remain generally dry, with day-long sunny intervals. Temperatures here will peak at 32°C, with lows of about 12°C.
At the Coast, residents of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and parts of Tana River County should expect sunny days and cloudy nights, with temperatures ranging from 21°C at night to 31°C during the day.
Northeastern counties including Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo will remain hot and dry, recording highs of up to 36°C and lows of 15°C. Similarly, Turkana and Samburu in the northwest will experience sunny intervals with daytime temperatures reaching 35°C and dropping to 10°C at night.
The department has also warned of strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots across coastal and arid regions. Residents, especially fishermen and those in open areas, have been advised to exercise caution.
With the mixed conditions expected countrywide, Kenyans are encouraged to prepare accordingly, whether for chilly evenings in Nairobi, rains in Kisumu, or scorching heat in the northeast.
