The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a warning of continued moderate to heavy rainfall across several parts of the country until Wednesday, cautioning residents to brace for possible flooding and traffic disruptions.
In an update released on Tuesday, the weatherman said rainfall is expected to exceed 20 mm in many areas and could surpass 50 mm in others within 24 hours. Some regions may experience very heavy rainfall of up to 100 mm, especially in highland and urban areas prone to poor drainage.
According to KMD, the rains may be accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon, evening, and early morning hours. Nairobi’s Embakasi East and South, Dagoretti South, Westlands, and Roysambu are among the areas expected to receive heavy downpours. Surrounding regions such as Lari, Gatundu North and South, Kabete, Kiambu, and Kajiado North could also experience intense rainfall.
The department further noted that on Wednesday, heavy rains are expected across Kuresoi South, Kuresoi North, Molo, Njoro, Naivasha, Gilgil, Bahati, and Subukia, while moderate showers will persist elsewhere until around 9 a.m. Localized rainfall is also anticipated over lakes Nakuru and Naivasha and their environs due to climatological effects.
Earlier on Tuesday, parts of the Coastal region, including Ukunda, experienced very heavy rainfall that caused flooding and disrupted business operations. Public transport was slowed as roads became waterlogged, leading to reduced commuter movement.
The Met Department attributed the ongoing rainfall to the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Chenge, which weakened over the Indian Ocean but continues to influence Kenya’s weather with cloudy conditions, gusty winds, and heavy precipitation.
Residents are urged to stay alert, avoid flooded areas, and follow updates from the Kenya Meteorological Department for real-time weather information and safety guidance.
