The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a fresh advisory warning of ongoing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and the risk of flash floods across several parts of the country. The advisory, released on Sunday, October 6, urges Kenyans to remain cautious and avoid walking or driving through moving water.
According to the department, rainfall will continue in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, Nairobi, the Coastal Region, and parts of the central and southern Rift Valley. In some of these areas, rainfall amounts are expected to range between 20mm and 50mm within 24 hours — levels that qualify as heavy rainfall under KMD classification.
“This rainfall may be accompanied by strong gusty winds and thunderstorms,” the statement noted, adding that flooding may occur even in places where no rain is falling, particularly downstream of high rainfall areas.
Residents are advised to remain alert and avoid crossing flooded roads or rivers, as just 15cm of fast-moving water can sweep away a vehicle. The department also cautioned the public to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid standing near tall trees or power lines.
Strong winds may damage weak structures, uproot trees, and disrupt power supply in some regions. Motorists are urged to drive carefully due to slippery roads and reduced visibility, while pedestrians should avoid walking through flooded paths and open drains.
October marks the onset of Kenya’s short rains season, which runs through December. While the rains are crucial for agriculture, they often lead to flash floods in urban areas such as Nairobi due to poor drainage systems.
The Meteorological Department has urged the public to monitor official updates and make informed decisions regarding travel and outdoor activities. The advisory remains in effect throughout the week, with updates to be issued as conditions evolve.
