The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather alert warning of increased rainfall and isolated storms in several parts of the country from Tuesday, August 12, to Monday, August 18, 2025.
According to the weekly forecast, the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, and parts of the North-western region are expected to experience intensified rainfall, with some areas likely to face localised thunderstorms. Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions are also anticipated in the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, South-eastern Lowlands, and parts of the Rift Valley.
The forecast further highlights notable temperature variations. Daytime highs in the North-eastern and North-western regions could exceed 30°C, while night-time lows may drop below 10°C in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and areas near Mt Kilimanjaro.
The department also cautioned about strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 m/s), especially along the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters, South-eastern Lowlands, and parts of the North-eastern and North-western regions.
Regional Outlook
In Western Kenya and the Rift Valley including Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Kericho residents should expect afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with occasional morning and evening rain. Daytime temperatures will range between 28°C and 30°C, with nights dropping to around 11°C.
The North-western region, including Turkana and Samburu, will start the week sunny but may see isolated storms and night showers toward the weekend. Maximum temperatures could reach 35°C, while night lows may drop to 8°C.
Central Kenya and Nairobi will experience cloudy mornings, sunny intervals, and scattered afternoon showers, with Saturday likely to bring more widespread rainfall. Minimum temperatures could dip to 8°C midweek, with highs of 26–27°C.
The North-eastern counties of Mandera, Garissa, and Wajir will remain largely dry and sunny, with light showers possible by Saturday night. Daytime highs will hover at 33–35°C.
South-eastern lowlands will see cloudy mornings and sunny afternoons, with no significant rainfall expected. Temperatures will range from 28°C to 30°C, with cooler nights of around 9°C by the weekend.
Coastal counties Mombasa, Kilifi, and Lamu will remain warm with occasional light showers on Friday and Saturday.
The public is urged to stay alert, especially in flood-prone areas, and mariners are advised to exercise caution due to strong winds and rough seas.
