Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds wreaked havoc in Muhoroni Sub-county, Kisumu County, on Thursday evening, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Two schools and close to 100 homes were badly affected in the storm, prompting urgent calls for assistance from both local leaders and the community.
At Ngeny Primary School, the strong winds blew off the roofs of seven classrooms, severely disrupting learning activities. Just a short distance away, Ngeny Secondary School suffered significant damage after its administration block and school laboratory were destroyed. Although the devastation was extensive, local authorities confirmed that no student sustained injuries during the incident.
The storm also felled several trees in the area, adding to the chaos and destruction experienced by residents. According to Sospeter Ngere, the Muhoroni Constituency manager, the rains damaged nearly 100 homes across Wangowe, Mibasi, Mikiria, and Chemelil villages, leaving many families displaced and struggling to recover.
Ngere appealed to both the national and county governments, as well as well-wishers, to step in and assist the affected families and schools. He emphasized the urgent need for shelter, food, and reconstruction support, particularly for learners whose education is now at risk due to damaged infrastructure.
The destruction of critical school facilities has raised concerns about how quickly learning can resume, especially with national examinations approaching. Parents and community leaders fear that without swift intervention, students in Muhoroni could face significant setbacks in their education.
This latest incident highlights the growing vulnerability of schools and homes in rural Kisumu to extreme weather events, which have become more frequent in recent years. The call for long-term solutions, such as stronger building structures and improved disaster preparedness, has never been more urgent.
As affected families begin the difficult process of rebuilding, the community looks to government agencies, humanitarian groups, and local leaders for immediate relief and long-term resilience strategies.
