At least 15 people have been confirmed dead, and 30 others are still missing following a devastating landslide in Marakwet East, Elgeyo Marakwet County. The tragedy struck after days of heavy rainfall that triggered flooding and ground movement across several parts of the country.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that 25 injured victims have been evacuated for urgent medical treatment as a multi-agency rescue team continues the search for survivors.
“A multi-agency team comprising the military, police, national government officers, the county government, and humanitarian organisations is undertaking ongoing search and rescue operations,” Murkomen said on Saturday.
Murkomen confirmed that households in areas deemed unsafe have been moved to safer grounds, and a reporting desk has been established to help families locate missing loved ones.
The worst-hit areas include Endo, Sambirir, and Embobut Wards, where landslides have destroyed homes, roads, and other key infrastructure. The government has since deployed police and military helicopters, equipped with medical personnel and Red Cross staff, to support rescue and relief efforts.
The Interior CS expressed his condolences to the affected families, assuring them of continued government support.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Endo, Sambirir, and Embobut Wards in Marakwet East Constituency following the devastating landslide that has led to the loss of lives and property,” he said.
Murkomen further stated that the national and county governments are working closely with non-state actors to assist the displaced families with humanitarian aid, medical support, and temporary shelter.
The government has urged residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall continues to threaten parts of the Rift Valley region.
