The government has deployed police and military helicopters to Elgeyo Marakwet County after devastating landslides struck the Kerio Valley region, killing more than 20 people and leaving dozens missing.
The tragedy, which has affected Endo, Sambirir, and Embobut Wards in Marakwet East Constituency, has destroyed homes, swept away property, and cut off major roads. The landslides were triggered by heavy rainfall that has battered the region in recent days, causing flooding and severe damage to infrastructure.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen expressed his condolences to the affected families, describing the situation as heartbreaking.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Endo, Sambirir, and Embobut Wards in Marakwet East Constituency following the devastating landslide that has led to the loss of lives and property, as well as the destruction of infrastructure, including the road network,” Murkomen said.
He confirmed that helicopters carrying medical personnel, police officers, and Kenya Red Cross staff have been dispatched to aid in the ongoing search and rescue operations. The government is also working with the county administration and non-state actors to provide emergency relief, including food and medical support.
Efforts are underway to reopen damaged roads to allow easier movement of rescue teams and supplies. “We are working with the County Government and non-state actors to respond to this unfortunate incident and provide the necessary support to the affected families,” Murkomen added.
According to Embobut MCA Paul Yatich, six bodies have been recovered from his ward, while another eleven were found in different parts of Kerio Valley. Many residents remain marooned, with security teams exploring alternative land routes to reach them.
The region remains on high alert as heavy rains continue, raising fears of more landslides and flash floods in the coming days.
