A tragic accident struck flood-hit Punjab province in Pakistan when a rescue boat capsized, killing nine people. The incident happened near Multan on Thursday, authorities confirmed on Friday.
Rescue Efforts Turn Deadly
The Punjab Disaster Management Authority said the boat had already rescued 24 people from flooded villages. Sadly, it overturned while carrying them to safety. Fifteen survivors were pulled from the water, but nine lives were lost.
Rescue teams face growing challenges. Many villagers refuse to leave without their cows, goats, and other animals. Livestock is their main source of income, and families fear losing everything. This resistance has forced officials to carry out difficult evacuations.
Human Toll of the Floods
The floods, triggered by intense monsoon rains, have been devastating. Since late June, at least 946 people have died across Pakistan. In Punjab province alone, 97 deaths have been reported.
Over 4,500 villages are under water. Authorities estimate that 4.4 million people are affected, with 2.4 million already evacuated. Punjab, home to half of Pakistan’s 240 million people, is also the country’s agricultural heartland.
Crops and Food Security at Risk
The disaster is not only a human tragedy but also a threat to food supplies. Rice, sugarcane, corn, cotton, and vegetables have been submerged in floodwaters.
Of particular concern is basmati rice, a premium crop grown only in India and Pakistan. Pakistan’s Punjab province produces more than 90% of the country’s basmati. In India, Punjab and Haryana supply over 80%. With both regions hit by floods, global prices are rising.
Basmati is a key export to Britain, the Middle East, and the United States. Experts say losses may be limited if rains ease and water continues to recede. Still, the damage has already disrupted the supply chain.
A Region Under Pressure
The floods highlight the growing threat of climate-driven disasters in South Asia. Lives, homes, and farmlands remain at risk as the monsoon season continues. For millions in Pakistan, recovery will take months.
