Senior Counsel Paul Muite has praised the Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) for its accurate and timely weather forecasts, which proved crucial as heavy rains pounded various parts of the country this week.
In its weekly outlook covering September 30 to October 6, 2025, the weather agency had projected rainfall across multiple regions, even as most areas experienced dry and sunny conditions at the time. The forecasts cautioned Kenyans, especially those in low-lying and flood-prone zones, to remain vigilant.
True to the prediction, heavy downpours have since been reported in Nairobi, disrupting transport and business operations. Similar conditions have also affected regions in the Rift Valley, Western, and Lake Victoria Basin. The accuracy of these forecasts prompted Muite to publicly commend the department, writing on his social media page:
“Hongera Meteorological Services. Accurate weather forecast, rain, and timely information to Kenyans.”
In its latest advisory, Kenya Met warned that rainfall is expected to intensify through Sunday, October 5, with some areas likely to experience between 20mm and 50mm within 24 hours, and in certain cases even more. The agency cautioned that this could result in localized flooding, slippery roads, and travel disruptions.
Meteorologists have urged Kenyans to monitor official updates and take precautions, especially in urban areas such as Nairobi, where inadequate drainage often worsens the effects of flash floods. October traditionally marks the beginning of the short rains season, vital for agriculture but equally risky for communities in flood-prone locations.
Weather forecasting, experts note, blends science, technology, and human interpretation. Using satellites, radars, and supercomputers, meteorologists simulate atmospheric changes to predict rainfall and storms. While not perfect, forecasts today are significantly more reliable than in previous decades.
