The Kenya Red Cross has issued a warning to residents living along River Tana and other low-lying areas in Garissa County, urging them to move to higher ground as the rainy season begins. The advisory is aimed at preventing displacement and potential loss of life, which has occurred in previous years due to flooding.
Heavy rains in past seasons have resulted in devastating consequences for the local communities, including displacement, destruction of property, and loss of lives. In April last year, at least 15 people drowned at Kona Punda along the Garissa-Madogo stretch after their boat capsized amid rising floodwaters.
Speaking at the Garissa Primary School playground during an event marking 60 years of humanitarian service by the Kenya Red Cross, North Eastern region head Hassan Musa emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures.
“As we celebrate 60 years of service to humanity, I want to take this opportunity to appeal to our people, especially those residing along the river, to do the necessary and move to higher ground,” said Musa.
He highlighted past flood-related tragedies and stressed the importance of preparedness, urging residents to adhere to safety guidelines to prevent further loss of life.
“We have witnessed the devastation caused by floods before. We don’t want to lose lives again. People should adhere to the safety guidelines provided and take the necessary precautions,” he added.
Musa assured residents that the Kenya Red Cross is well-prepared to handle emergencies, with pre-positioned boats and tractors ready to assist in rescue operations. He also called on locals to undergo first aid training to enhance their ability to respond to emergencies effectively.
“This region has faced various emergencies, from floods and drought to insecurity. Having more people trained in first aid will be invaluable in times of crisis,” he noted.
The event featured a procession from the Tana River Bridge through Garissa town, culminating in a simulation exercise at Garissa Primary School. The drill showcased how the Kenya Red Cross responds to emergencies, including accidents involving bodaboda riders, reinforcing the need for community preparedness and swift response mechanisms.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with local authorities to mitigate the risks posed by the rains.
