China has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with Kenya while dismissing external calls to “review” the relationship. Speaking in Nairobi during the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, sharply criticized recent remarks by some U.S. senators urging Washington to reassess its relations with Nairobi over its cooperation with Beijing.
Ambassador Guo described the calls as a display of “Cold War mentality and hegemonic behavior,” stressing that Kenya-China ties are rooted in mutual respect and benefit. “A few days ago, a certain country claimed it would conduct a so-called ‘review’ of Kenya’s relationship with China. China-Kenya friendly cooperation is for the well-being of our two peoples. What does it have to do with other countries?” she posed.
The envoy underscored that China firmly opposes unilateralism and interference in sovereign affairs, warning that such practices threaten international peace and stability. “Eight decades have elapsed, yet unilateralism, hegemony and bullying are causing great harm. The human race once again finds itself at the crossroads between unity and division, dialogue and confrontation, win-win cooperation and zero-sum games,” she said.
On Taiwan, Ambassador Guo reiterated Beijing’s long-standing position that the island’s reunification with China remains an irreversible outcome of World War II. She commended Kenya for consistently upholding the One-China Principle and rejecting separatist tendencies.
The commemorative event, held at the National Museums of Kenya, brought together dignitaries including Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Principal Secretary for Gender and Affirmative Action Anne Wang’ombe, MP Stephen Mogaka, former African Union Deputy Chairperson Erastus Mwencha, and senior officials from Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.
Beyond politics, Ambassador Guo emphasized that the anniversary was also a moment for reflection and peacebuilding. “History is the best teacher and the best dose of sobriety. We must resolutely oppose hegemony and power politics in all forms and work together to create a better future for humanity,” she remarked.
The envoy’s message reinforced Beijing’s growing emphasis on protecting its global partnerships, while positioning Kenya-China cooperation as a sovereign choice beyond external influence.
