Senior Counsel Martha Karua has expressed serious concerns about the health of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye. According to Karua, Besigye has been experiencing dizziness and other health issues caused by his prolonged detention.
Speaking on Monday, Karua said she raised the matter with the city mayor to ensure Besigye receives urgent medical attention. “Dr. Kizza Besigye is unwell. He is having bouts of dizziness and needs to be seen by doctors. We have informed the Lord Mayor, and his team will take it up,” Karua explained.
Karua described Besigye’s detention as both lengthy and unnecessary, warning that it has severely affected his health.
A History of Arrests
Besigye has been arrested at least five times. His most recent arrest occurred on November 16, 2024, in Nairobi, where he was to attend Karua’s book launch. Four days later, he appeared before a military court in Kampala, facing charges of possession of an illegal firearm alongside Hajj Lutale. Both pleaded not guilty and were remanded to Luzira Maximum Security Prison.
In January 2025, a military court ruled that Besigye could be tried for treachery.
Visible Signs of Frailty
During his February 14 court appearance at Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Court, Besigye appeared frail and sickly. Observers noted his sunken cheeks, hollow eyes, and prominent cheekbones. His lawyers, led by Erias Lukwago, argued that the proceedings should not continue, stating that Besigye’s condition made it impossible to proceed without violating his human rights.
Ongoing Concerns
Despite a Supreme Court ruling halting civilian trials in military courts, Besigye remains on remand facing court-martial charges. Human rights groups and legal advocates are calling for urgent medical care to prevent further deterioration.
Karua and other supporters continue to push authorities to prioritize Besigye’s health and ensure he receives proper medical attention while in detention.
