Jailed Tanzanian and Ugandan opposition leaders Tundu Lissu and Kizza Besigye have been recognised as Champions of Democracy in Africa by the Democracy Union of Africa Conference 2025. The prestigious awards celebrate individuals who have shown unwavering commitment to promoting democracy, justice, and human rights across the continent.
Lissu’s recognition comes as Tanzania heads to the polls amid growing criticism of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration over alleged suppression of dissent. The award was received on his behalf by CHADEMA Secretary General Deogratius Munishi, who read the imprisoned leader’s acceptance speech.
“In the past six months that I have been in this maximum-security prison, charged with treason for calling for reforms to our rotten electoral system, CHADEMA has been slapped with a ban on political activity,” Lissu’s speech read.
Former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, after whom the awards are named, urged African nations to uphold democracy and reject authoritarianism.
“There are those who believe democracy slows development, but it remains the only sustainable path forward,” Akufo-Addo said.
KANU Chairperson Gideon Moi, Democratic Party Leader Justin Muturi, and Akufo-Addo jointly called for African states to safeguard democratic institutions and the rule of law.
“It is time we rise against radical populist politics and respect our nations’ sovereignty,” Moi noted, while Muturi added that “leadership in Africa must always be decided by the people.”
Akufo-Addo also condemned the rising trend of unconstitutional power takeovers and paid tribute to the late Raila Odinga for his lifelong dedication to democracy. Additionally, the late President Daniel arap Moi was honoured posthumously for his contributions to Africa’s development, with his son Gideon Moi receiving the award on his behalf.
The event reinforced the urgent call for African leaders to recommit to democratic ideals and ensure that governance truly reflects the will of the people.
