South Sudanese Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel is emerging as a powerful figure in Juba. On Monday, President Salva Kiir promoted him from Lieutenant General to full General in the National Security Service (NSS).
This is Bol’s third major promotion in less than a year, raising speculation that he may be Kiir’s preferred successor.
Bol, 52, was appointed Vice President in February, replacing Dr. James Wani Igga, and now heads the government’s economic cluster. In May, he also became First Deputy Chairman of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM).
Political Context
Bol’s rise comes amid tensions with First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar. Last week, Kiir suspended Machar and referred him to court for treason and crimes against humanity after a March militia attack on a military base in Nasir County, Upper Nile state.
Bol’s promotion to full General strengthens his influence in both politics and security. Observers believe this move prepares him to take over when Kiir retires.
Gratitude and Alliances
In a message on X, Bol thanked Kiir and acknowledged support from first lady Mary Ayen Mayardit. He wrote, “Throughout my career, H.E. the President has guided me and challenged me to take on greater responsibilities in my service to the nation, and I remain committed to living up to that trust.”
Controversies
Bol’s rise is not without controversy. In 2017, the United States sanctioned him over corruption allegations linked to his construction company. Despite this, Kiir has continued to elevate Bol, signaling strong trust and political alignment.
The Road Ahead
South Sudan remains fragile. The UN warns of potential civil unrest, while Machar’s SPLM-IO claims the transitional government has collapsed. Bol’s growing influence suggests he could play a key role in shaping the country’s future.
