At least three people have died and dozens more injured after Russia launched another widespread air assault on Ukraine overnight, targeting multiple regions with drones, cruise, and ballistic missiles. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that 10 regions were struck, marking one of the most extensive attacks in recent weeks.
In the eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, two people were killed following a barrage described by regional governor Serhiy Lysak as a “hellish night and morning.” Pavlohrad, an industrial city in the region, experienced repeated explosions as drones and missiles targeted critical infrastructure including a clinic, a fire department, and a cultural institution. Zelensky said important infrastructure was hit, with damage potentially affecting Ukraine’s defense production. Pavlohrad is home to a missile plant and has been previously targeted by Russian forces.
In the southern port city of Odesa, a residential building was struck, igniting a fire on the upper floors. Emergency services rescued five people from burning apartments, but one woman later succumbed to her injuries. At least six others were wounded.
Further north, in the Sumy region, critical infrastructure was hit, leaving thousands of families without power. The nearby town of Shostka, less than 50 kilometers from the Russian border, was also attacked, with a targeted strike sparking a significant fire. Officials have not disclosed the exact nature of the damaged facility.
Ukraine’s military reported that over 340 explosive and dummy drones, along with 35 missiles, were used in the assault. While 90% of them were intercepted or disabled, more than 30 breached Ukraine’s defenses. Zelensky reiterated the urgent need for enhanced air defense capabilities, calling for more interceptor drones and increased domestic production.
Meanwhile, Russia claimed it downed over 70 Ukrainian drones targeting regions including Rostov, Moscow, and Bryansk. Damage to homes and railways was reported in Rostov, disrupting vital supply routes into Ukraine.
On the front lines, fighting intensified near Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region, where Ukrainian forces continue to resist Russian attempts to encircle the city. Commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi described Ukraine’s defense as “steadfast” amid growing pressure.
