The man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk is refusing to talk to investigators. Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed the news on Sunday.
Arrest and Charges
The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested after a 33-hour manhunt. He is being held in custody and will face formal charges on Tuesday. Robinson allegedly fired a long-range rifle shot during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University in Orem.
More than 3,000 people were in attendance. Kirk, the co-founder of Turning Point USA and an ally of former President Donald Trump, was killed instantly.
Investigators Look for Answers
Governor Cox said Robinson has not confessed. However, family members, friends, and his roommate have been cooperative. The roommate, who is transitioning from male to female, has spoken with the FBI and provided key details.
Police also found bullet casings with bizarre engravings. Some included internet memes and video game references. One casing read: “hey fascist! CATCH!” followed by gaming symbols. Another mocked readers with: “If you read this, you are GAY Lmao.”
Motive Still Unclear
Robinson was a student at Dixie Technical College. Although raised in a religious, conservative household, he reportedly held different views from his family. According to affidavits, he had spoken about disliking Kirk’s rhetoric, especially his comments on LGBTQ and immigrant issues.
Still, investigators have not determined a clear motive.
Political Reactions
The killing has fueled fears of rising political violence in the U.S. Trump blamed “the radical left,” though no evidence has been presented. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro urged leaders to lower the temperature and reject violent rhetoric.
Governor Cox said social media has played a “direct role” in recent political assassination attempts.
Moving Forward
Turning Point USA announced a memorial for Charlie Kirk on September 21 in Glendale, Arizona. His widow promised the movement will continue its mission to engage young conservatives.
