On September 1, President Xi Jinping launched the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Plus meeting. The move comes at a historic moment—the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
The initiative calls for a fairer and more balanced global system. It aims to give developing countries, including Kenya, a stronger voice in international decision-making.
Key Principles of the GGI
President Xi outlined five main principles:
- Sovereign equality – All countries, big or small, rich or poor, should have equal rights in global affairs.
- Respect for international law – Rules should be made and observed by all nations, not just a few powerful states.
- Multilateralism – Cooperation, not unilateralism or bullying, is the best path forward.
- People-centred approach – Global governance should focus on improving people’s lives and ensuring shared prosperity.
- Real action – Results matter more than words. The initiative calls for practical solutions to global challenges.
Why Now?
The current global governance system is under pressure. Many developing countries feel sidelined while powerful states dominate decision-making. At the same time, issues like climate change, security threats, and economic inequality demand collective action.
China argues that the GGI responds to these challenges by promoting fairness, cooperation, and inclusivity.
What It Means for Kenya and the Global South
The GGI does not seek to replace the existing international order. Instead, it calls for reforms to make the system more just. For Kenya and other Global South countries, this means:
- Equal participation in international decisions.
- Stronger partnerships with China and other nations.
- Opportunities to address local and global challenges through cooperation.
Looking Ahead
The GGI builds on three other Chinese initiatives: the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilisation Initiative. Together, they cover development, peace, cultural exchange, and governance.
By supporting the GGI, Kenya can strengthen its role in shaping fairer international policies while promoting cooperation instead of confrontation.
China’s proposal shows its intent to stand for multilateralism, unity, and progress at a time when the world needs them most.
