Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng has called for greater cooperation and reduced misunderstandings between China and the United States, emphasizing the importance of a stable and mutually beneficial economic and trade relationship. He made these remarks during a new round of China-U.S. economic and trade talks held in Stockholm, Sweden, on Monday and Tuesday, alongside U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
He Lifeng urged the U.S. to work with China to deepen dialogue, enhance consensus, and strive for more win-win outcomes. He stated that a “stable, healthy and sustainable” China-U.S. economic relationship serves not only both countries’ development goals but also global economic growth and stability.
During the Stockholm talks, both delegations engaged in what were described as “candid, in-depth and constructive” discussions on macroeconomic policies and issues of mutual concern. The two sides also reviewed progress from earlier discussions in Geneva and London, reaffirming commitments and implementation of previously agreed frameworks.
One significant outcome of the talks was a mutual intention to pursue a 90-day extension of the pause on 24 percent of reciprocal tariffs imposed by the U.S., as well as corresponding countermeasures by China. This move is seen as a step toward easing ongoing trade tensions.
Vice Premier He reiterated China’s consistent stance on economic relations with the U.S., emphasizing mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. He stressed that cooperation benefits both nations, while confrontation would only be harmful.
Referring to the June 5 phone call between the Chinese and U.S. presidents, He called for full implementation of the consensus reached during that conversation. He also urged both sides to continue leveraging the China-U.S. economic and trade consultation mechanism to foster deeper mutual trust.
The U.S. delegation echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the global importance of a stable U.S.-China economic relationship. They expressed readiness to continue resolving differences through dialogue and to promote concrete outcomes in future engagements.
As global economic uncertainties persist, the latest talks mark a hopeful step toward greater stability and cooperation between the world’s two largest economies.
