At least 11 people were injured in a stabbing attack at a Walmart store in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday, prompting a swift response from local and federal law enforcement authorities. The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a suspect, identified as a Michigan resident, is in custody following what officials described as a “random act” of violence.
The stabbing incident occurred inside the Walmart located on US-31 South. Emergency services, including multiple police cruisers and ambulances, quickly arrived at the scene, as captured in videos circulating on social media.
Munson Medical Center, the nearest hospital, confirmed it was treating all 11 victims. “As a result, our Emergency Department is currently experiencing a higher-than-usual volume of patients,” the hospital said in a statement. According to local media, at least three victims were undergoing surgery, though the extent of the injuries remains unclear.
Sheriff Michael Shea stated that the weapon used in the attack was a folding knife and indicated there was no known motive. “At this time, it appears to have been a random act,” Shea said, adding that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Federal support has also been mobilized. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino announced that federal personnel were working closely with local authorities to assist with the investigation.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed shock and sorrow at the incident. “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence,” she said in a statement, noting that she is in touch with law enforcement for updates.
The Walmart store was evacuated and remained closed as investigators processed the scene and collected evidence. Witnesses are being interviewed, and security footage is being reviewed to piece together how the events unfolded.
Traverse City, a small city located approximately 255 miles northwest of Detroit, is known for its peaceful environment and tourism. Saturday’s attack has left the community stunned and searching for answers as authorities work to determine the motive and background of the suspect.
