Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has announced plans to present US President Donald Trump with the country’s highest civilian award the Israeli Presidential Medal of Honour. The award recognizes Trump’s key role in securing the release of hostages from Gaza and in helping to broker a peace plan aimed at ending the long-running conflict between Israel and Hamas.
In a statement released by his office on Monday, President Herzog praised Trump’s “tireless efforts” in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East.
“Through his tireless efforts, President Trump has not only helped bring our loved ones home but has also laid the foundations for a new era in the Middle East built on security, cooperation, and genuine hope for a peaceful future,” Herzog said.
The medal will be presented in the coming months, and Herzog is expected to officially inform Trump of the decision during his visit to Israel on Monday. The trip comes as Israel and Hamas prepare to carry out a crucial hostage-prisoner exchange, the first step in a broader peace plan proposed by Trump.
Trump’s 20-point peace framework aims to end more than two years of war, which began after Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The plan reportedly includes steps toward reconstruction, regional security cooperation, and long-term stability for both Israelis and Palestinians.
During his brief visit, Trump is scheduled to meet with families of released hostages and address the Israeli parliament.
The Israeli Presidential Medal of Honour is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the State of Israel or to humanity. Previous recipients include former US President Barack Obama, who was honoured in 2013.
Herzog’s decision marks a significant diplomatic gesture, underscoring Israel’s appreciation for Trump’s renewed involvement in the region’s peace efforts.
