Five people were killed and seven seriously wounded in a shooting attack at Ramot Junction, on the northern outskirts of Jerusalem, according to Israeli authorities and paramedics.
Magen David Adom identified the deceased as three men in their 30s, one man in his 50s, and one woman in her 50s. Nine people with gunshot injuries were taken to hospitals, alongside three others hurt by broken glass.
Israeli police said two gunmen arrived in a vehicle and opened fire near a bus stop. A security officer and a civilian returned fire, neutralizing the attackers. Police secured the area, while bomb disposal and forensic teams worked to ensure safety and gather evidence.
The Israeli military deployed soldiers to support the police search and to prevent further attacks. Troops also encircled areas near Ramallah in the West Bank. Reports suggest the attackers came from the villages of al-Qubeiba and Qatanna, about six miles west of Ramot Junction.
Police Assistant Commissioner Shlomi Bachar said authorities are investigating how the attackers entered the city, who assisted them, and expect to identify all involved soon. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a security briefing following the attack.
No group claimed responsibility, but Hamas praised the attack, calling it a “heroic operation” and a response to Israel’s “occupation crimes.”
Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul condemned the attack, saying he was “deeply shocked” and expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
The attack highlights ongoing tensions in Jerusalem and surrounding areas, emphasizing the persistent security challenges in the region.
