Former U.S. President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, his office confirmed on Sunday. The 82-year-old Democrat received the diagnosis on Friday following medical investigations prompted by urinary symptoms and the discovery of a prostate nodule.
“This represents a more aggressive form of the disease,” read a statement from Biden’s office, “but the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management.” The former president and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight men will be diagnosed with the disease during their lifetime. While early detection often leads to favorable outcomes, aggressive and metastatic cases, like Biden’s, pose greater challenges and typically require a combination of hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or radiation.
Biden’s personal history with cancer is well known. His eldest son, Beau Biden, died from brain cancer in 2015 a loss that deeply shaped the former president’s political and personal life.
In a rare moment of unity, political figures from both sides expressed support. Former President Donald Trump, who has frequently criticized Biden, responded on Truth Social: “We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”
Vice President Kamala Harris, who stepped in as the Democratic nominee after Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race, offered a heartfelt message on X: “Joe is a fighter. I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership. We are hopeful for a full and speedy recovery.”
As the country processes the news, the focus remains on Biden’s health and treatment plan. Despite his diagnosis, supporters emphasize the former president’s determination and enduring spirit qualities that have defined his long career in public service.
