Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops serving under the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) have intensified operations in Ituri Province. The soldiers are working closely with the Indonesian Rapid Deployment Battalion, the Republic of South Africa Battalion (RSABATT), and the Congolese army (FARDC).
Patrols Boost Safety in Villages
The joint forces have carried out round-the-clock patrols in Komanda, Ngeleza, Bandiamosi, Bamande, and Irumu villages. According to KENQRF Commander Lieutenant Colonel Simon Seda, these efforts have brought calm to the area.
“Since the operation began a few weeks ago, the security situation has significantly improved. Feedback from local elders, women, and youth shows that people now feel safer and can sleep peacefully,” he said.
The goal of the operations is to disrupt and neutralize armed groups that have caused fear in the region. The presence of peacekeepers has helped restore confidence among local communities.
UN Awards KDF Troops
On August 29, the Fourth Contingent of KENQRF received UN service medals for their outstanding performance during a one-year mission. The medal parade was led by MONUSCO Force Commander, Lieutenant General Ulisses de Mesquita Gomes.
He praised the Kenyan soldiers for their resilience and their strong bond with the community. “Your cultural exchanges, leadership engagements, and religious outreach have built trust and shown the compassion of true peacekeepers,” he noted.
A Symbol of Service and Sacrifice
After the awards, Lt Col Seda expressed gratitude on behalf of his troops. He emphasized that the medals represent both service and sacrifice.
“These medals remind us of the trust placed in us by the people of the DRC, local security forces, and MONUSCO. We are proud to have flown the Kenyan flag high under the United Nations,” he said.
