Kenya has reiterated its unwavering commitment to the South Sudan peace process, underscoring its role as a regional guarantor of stability and a key supporter of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS). This was emphasized on Tuesday when the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, hosted the Chairperson of the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM), Major General Teshome Anagaw, at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.
During the meeting, General Kahariri highlighted the strategic importance of peace in South Sudan to the broader security of the East African region. He reaffirmed Kenya’s readiness to continue providing personnel, expertise, and logistical support to the peacekeeping efforts.
“Peace in South Sudan is not just a regional imperative; it is a moral responsibility for the security and prosperity of our region,” said General Kahariri. “CTSAMVM’s role is critical in ensuring that all parties uphold the ceasefire and move towards lasting peace. Kenya remains committed to this mission and to the broader commitment to IGAD and regional peace efforts.”
Their discussions focused on enhancing CTSAMVM’s operations, ensuring the mechanism remains actively engaged and effective in monitoring compliance with the peace agreement.
Maj Gen Teshome Anagaw, on his part, commended Kenya’s longstanding support for peace and stability in South Sudan, acknowledging the country’s leadership in peacekeeping and mediation efforts across the region. He also provided an update on CTSAMVM’s current operations, highlighting both progress made and ongoing challenges in enforcing ceasefire and transitional security arrangements.
CTSAMVM is a vital institution established by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to monitor the implementation of the R-ARCSS. The mechanism includes representatives from IGAD, the African Union, Troika countries, and other international stakeholders.
Also in attendance were outgoing CTSAMVM Chairperson Maj Gen Yitayal Gelaw and the KDF’s Chief of Strategic Policy and Plans, Brigadier Ronald Makori, along with other senior military officials, reinforcing Kenya’s deep engagement in the peace process.
