Kenya has firmly rejected any attempts to divide Sudan. In a statement on Monday, September 15, the government welcomed the Quad initiative Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the United States to restore peace in Sudan.
Kenya stressed that the country’s unity and territorial integrity must be respected. “Kenya firmly rejects any attempts to balkanise or split sovereign states and reiterates its solid support for a unified Sudan for the benefit of its people,” the statement said.
Conflict Between SAF and RSF
Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023. The fight between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has displaced millions and killed tens of thousands. Essential services have collapsed, making the situation one of Africa’s most devastating conflicts in recent history.
Kenya warned that the conflict is no longer just a Sudanese issue. Extremist groups are exploiting the instability, posing a broader regional threat.
Kenya Calls for Humanitarian Action
Kenya urged international efforts to end the humanitarian crisis. The government called for a ceasefire to allow aid to reach those in need.
“Kenya remains committed to facilitating the delivery of humanitarian supplies through its territory to support the people of Sudan,” the statement said. Kenya pledged to help establish humanitarian corridors and work with aid organizations to ensure supplies reach vulnerable populations.
Support for Quad Peace Talks
Peace talks led by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union have stalled. Both SAF and RSF have accused each other of breaking ceasefires.
Kenya supports the Quad’s push for an inclusive, Sudan-led political process. The country emphasized that any solution must reflect the voices of Sudanese communities and political groups most affected by the war.
By backing the Quad and committing to humanitarian aid, Kenya positions itself as a key advocate for Sudan’s unity, stability, and the well-being of its citizens.
