The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has confirmed that more soldiers will soon join United Nations (UN) peacekeeping missions. The announcement followed a training exercise at Kangaita training camp in Nanyuki, which ended on September 10.
Major General Luka Kutto, the General Officer Commanding Eastern Command (EASTCOM), presided over the closing ceremony. He said the troops had passed their mission readiness assessment and were now prepared for deployment.
Training for Peace
The training gave soldiers the skills they need to carry out the UN mandate. According to KDF, the sessions focused on practical knowledge and mission-specific tasks. The goal was to ensure that troops are ready to work with other allied forces once deployed.
Core Duties in Mission Areas
The Kenyan contingent will handle key responsibilities in their assigned regions. These include:
- Protection of civilians (PoC)
- Disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) of illegal armed groups
- Supporting Security Sector Reforms (SSR)
These tasks are vital for promoting peace and stability. They also help strengthen justice and security institutions in conflict-affected areas.
A Call for Professionalism
Major General Kutto reminded the soldiers that they represent more than just the military.
“You are going out there as ambassadors of the Republic of Kenya. KDF is known for its professionalism in peacekeeping and peace enforcement missions. You must maintain these high standards,” he said.
Kenya’s Peacekeeping Record
Kenya has a long history of contributing to UN missions across Africa and beyond. KDF troops are respected for their discipline, effectiveness, and dedication. This new deployment continues Kenya’s role in supporting international peace and security.
By joining these operations, the soldiers will not only protect communities but also help rebuild institutions and restore order in fragile regions.
