France’s President Emmanuel Macron has joined a growing list of world leaders in paying tribute to Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday morning while undergoing treatment in India. He was 80.
In his heartfelt condolence message, President Macron described Odinga as a courageous statesman whose vision and dedication profoundly shaped Kenya’s democratic journey. The French leader noted that Odinga’s life was a testament to justice, equality, and freedom values that resonate across all democratic societies.
“His commitment to equality and inclusion reflected the very ideals that inspire democratic societies across the world,” Macron said. “In these difficult days, our thoughts are with his family and all Kenyans mourning the loss of a national figure. France stands beside the people of Kenya in this moment of grief.”
Former US President Barack Obama also mourned the late Odinga, describing him as a “towering figure” who devoted his life to democracy and social justice. Obama lauded Odinga’s unwavering fight for freedom and governance reform in Kenya, recalling his endurance through decades of political struggle and sacrifice.
“Raila Odinga was a leader who placed the interests of his nation above personal ambition. His resilience and vision inspired generations of Africans to believe in the promise of democracy,” Obama noted.
Odinga, who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013, was widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential opposition leaders. His political career, marked by both triumphs and tribulations, left an indelible mark on Kenya’s governance and democratic transformation.
According to his family, Raila Odinga will be laid to rest at his ancestral home in Kang’o ka Jaramogi, Bondo, Siaya County. The burial will be a private ceremony attended by close family members and dignitaries, as confirmed by his elder brother and Siaya Senator, Dr. Oburu Odinga.
