French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte are taking legal action in the United States. They are suing American commentator Candace Owens for spreading false claims that Brigitte was born male.
Proof to Be Presented in Court
The Macrons’ lawyer, Tom Clare, confirmed they will present both scientific evidence and photographs. He told the BBC’s Fame Under Fire podcast that Brigitte finds the claims “incredibly upsetting” and a serious distraction for the president.
According to Clare, Brigitte is ready to go through the uncomfortable process of showing private evidence, including photos of her pregnancies. He also said expert testimony will be shared to prove the conspiracy theories are false.
Origins of the Rumor
The claim began in fringe online spaces and spread widely after a 2021 YouTube video by two French bloggers. In 2024, the Macrons won a defamation case in France against the bloggers. However, that ruling was overturned in 2025 on free speech grounds.
Owens has since repeated the claim many times. She even said she would risk her “entire professional reputation” on the belief.
The US Case Against Owens
In July 2025, the Macrons filed a defamation lawsuit in the US. They accuse Owens of ignoring credible evidence and deliberately platforming conspiracy theorists. To win, they must prove “actual malice,” meaning Owens knowingly spread lies or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.
Owens’ legal team has filed a motion to dismiss. They argue that Delaware, where the case was filed, is the wrong venue and that defending the case there would cause her “substantial hardship.”
Macron’s Stand
President Macron has described the lawsuit as a defense of his family and his honour. “This is nonsense,” he told Paris Match. “It is someone who knew full well that she had false information and did so with the aim of causing harm.”
