A security advisory has been issued in Malawi warning of potential unrest ahead of the official announcement of election results on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lilongwe Security Advisory noted unconfirmed reports suggesting that groups from surrounding villages may be preparing rudimentary weapons and other materials with the intention of engaging in possible violence during the official results declaration scheduled for 14:00 in the City Centre.
“Based on past incidents, there is a credible risk that demonstrations could escalate rapidly,” the advisory cautioned.
Businesses and Residents Urged to Take Precautions
The alert advised businesses in and around the City Centre to consider going into lockdown from early afternoon until the situation stabilises. It also cautioned motorists against traveling through or parking in the area from midday.
Residents were further urged to avoid Old Town and other locations that have historically been flashpoints for political unrest. For safety, people not directly involved in demonstrations were encouraged to stay indoors, keep communication lines open, and avoid unnecessary exposure.
The advisory also highlighted the dangers of attempting to drive into or through crowds, stressing that such encounters could turn violent without warning.
Tension High as Results Loom
The heightened alert comes as tension remains high in Malawi following recently concluded elections. Provisional results released so far indicate incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera trailing former President Peter Mutharika by a significant margin.
With emotions running high, authorities are urging both businesses and individuals to remain vigilant and follow official updates.
“Monitor official advisories and local situation reports for updates,” the statement emphasized, noting that while the reports remain unconfirmed, precautions are necessary until the election results are formally announced and the situation stabilises.
As Malawi awaits the outcome, the security advisory serves as a reminder of the fragile atmosphere and the importance of prioritizing safety during this sensitive period.
