Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced she will resign from Congress on 5 January 2026, marking a stunning end to her once-powerful role in the Republican Party. The firebrand lawmaker, long considered one of Donald Trump’s most loyal Maga allies, made the announcement in a video posted on social media—days after a public and increasingly hostile feud with the former president.
Greene said her decision was meant to spare her constituents from a bruising primary battle, especially after Trump threatened to back a challenger to unseat her. “I refuse to be a battered wife hoping it all goes away,” she said, accusing Trump of publicly humiliating and threatening her despite years of unwavering support.
The fallout stems largely from Greene’s relentless push to release files related to the late financier and convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. While Trump and his base once championed the issue, he recently dismissed it as a distraction. When Greene intensified her demands, Trump labelled her a “traitor” and “wacky” in a series of social media posts—remarks she described as “hurtful” in her resignation letter.
Under growing pressure, Trump reversed his position last week and approved a bill requiring the US Justice Department to release the Epstein documents within 30 days. But the shift came too late to salvage the fractured relationship.
Greene, elected in 2020 amid controversy over her past promotion of QAnon conspiracy theories, used her resignation video to highlight her legislative achievements. She also rejected speculation that she would seek statewide office, despite earlier reports suggesting she had considered a run for governor or the US Senate.
Her departure will narrow the already thin Republican majority in the House, further intensifying the stakes ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. With party unity already strained, Greene’s exit underscores deepening ideological divisions within the GOP many of them orbiting around Trump’s polarizing influence.
As one of Trump’s loudest defenders turned outspoken critic, Greene’s resignation signals a remarkable political reversal and a moment likely to reshape Republican dynamics heading into the next election cycle.
