A historic milestone in global cultural exchange has been marked in Moscow with the launch of the first permanent space dedicated to African contemporary art. The I-A Gallery, founded by philosopher Dr. Yanina Dubeykovskaya, inaugurated the space with the exhibition “And Behold!”, offering Russian audiences an immersive introduction to Africa’s dynamic art scene.
The exhibition showcases the works of renowned African artists Boet Nyariri from Zimbabwe and Mulenga Mubanga from Zambia. Both artists boast impressive portfolios, with their works featured in prestigious exhibitions and collections across Africa and Europe. “And Behold!” marks their debut presentation in Russia, reflecting a growing interest in African narratives within global artistic discourse.
Curated by Dr. Dubeykovskaya alongside African art historian Taisiia Konstantinova, Director of Strategic Development at the I-A Gallery, the exhibition is the product of a collaboration with African art collector Stephane Conan. The curators aim to foster a deeper appreciation for African artistic expression while building lasting connections between African and Russian cultural spheres.
Looking ahead, the gallery plans to host exhibitions featuring artists from more than a dozen African countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Namibia, Ghana, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Madagascar. These exhibitions will be accompanied by public engagement programs such as lectures, artist talks, and film screenings, creating platforms for dialogue and exchange between African and Russian art communities.
In addition, the I-A Gallery is preparing to host the Zambezi Art Residency from November 2–12, 2025. Themed “Initiation”, the residency invites international artists and art tourists to engage with African landscapes and traditions through collaborative creation and research. The residency will culminate in a group exhibition.
The gallery is also a proud partner of the African Women in Art Award (AWAA), which celebrates the creativity of African women artists. The 2025 edition, also themed “Initiation”, encourages explorations of identity, transformation, and cultural heritage. Applications open in September 2025, closing on November 1. Submissions can be sent to: awaaapplication@gmail.com.
With this new space, the I-A Gallery cements its role as a bridge between African artistic excellence and the global art community.
