Five people were killed and at least 12 others injured in a suicide bombing at the headquarters of Pakistan’s Federal Constabulary in Peshawar on Monday. Authorities described the attack as a “foiled terrorist plot” after the attackers were shot before entering the building.
According to police, two suicide bombers charged at the paramilitary complex, which is located in a highly secured area of the city. Witnesses reported hearing two loud explosions at around 08:10 local time (03:10 GMT). Security personnel engaged the attackers at the gate, preventing them from breaching the building.
Local officials confirmed that three security officials died, while five other security personnel and seven civilians sustained injuries. Rescue teams were quickly dispatched to the scene, and the area remains cordoned off as investigations continue.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, stating, “The perpetrators of this incident should be identified as soon as possible and brought to justice.”
The Federal Constabulary, formerly known as the Frontier Constabulary, is responsible for handling security situations that exceed the regular police force’s capacity. Its duties include responding to tribal incursions, militant activity, and organized crime.
Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, lies along Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan and has historically been a hotspot for militant violence. The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (Pakistani Taliban) has been active in the region and has claimed responsibility for previous attacks targeting security forces.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the group behind Monday’s bombing, and investigations are ongoing. Security measures across the city have reportedly been tightened in response, with checkpoints and patrols increased near sensitive installations.
This incident highlights the continuing threat of militant attacks in northwest Pakistan, despite ongoing efforts by authorities to strengthen security in the region. Residents of Peshawar have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
