US lawmakers have released a handwritten letter from UK Ambassador Peter Mandelson calling Jeffrey Epstein “my best pal.” The letter was part of a birthday collection created by Ghislaine Maxwell for Epstein’s 50th birthday. It was submitted to the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.
What the Letter Said
In the note, Mandelson described Epstein as “an intelligent, sharp-witted man.” He wrote about Epstein appearing unexpectedly in his life, then disappearing again, leaving Mandelson with friends or even dogs for company. The letter concluded with Mandelson calling Epstein “my best pal.”
The collection included several photographs, such as Mandelson in shorts on a balcony, a person kayaking, tropical resorts, and moments of him laughing with Epstein.
Controversial Additions
The birthday bundle also reportedly contains a sexually suggestive letter and drawing allegedly signed by former US President Donald Trump. The White House has denied its authenticity.
Mandelson’s Response
Mandelson, a key figure in the UK’s New Labour project, has said he regrets ever meeting Epstein or being introduced to him by Maxwell. A spokesperson told the BBC that Mandelson “very much regrets ever having been introduced to Epstein.”
Previous Scrutiny
Mandelson’s ties to Epstein drew attention in a 2019 JP Morgan internal report. The report noted Epstein had “particularly close relationships” with both Mandelson and Prince Andrew, the Duke of York.
Epstein’s Death and Legacy
Epstein died by suicide in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. The release of Mandelson’s letter has reignited questions about Epstein’s social network and the high-profile figures connected to him.
