A New York City police officer is among four people killed in a tragic mass shooting at a high-rise office building in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening. The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, opened fire with an MR rifle before turning the weapon on himself.
Authorities say Tamura entered 345 Park Avenue home to major companies such as the NFL and Blackstone just after 6:30 p.m. ET. With his rifle in plain view, he began shooting in the lobby, fatally striking Officer Didarul Islam, who was working a security post. Islam, an NYPD officer and father of two, was hailed as a hero by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “He died as he lived a hero,” she said.
Tamura continued his rampage, firing at random and striking several others, including a security guard and another man in the lobby. While waiting for the elevator, he spared a woman who stepped off, allowing her to pass before heading to the 33rd floor, where Ruden Building Management is located. There, he shot and killed another victim before taking his own life in a hallway.
In total, three people including Officer Islam were killed by the gunman, with Tamura bringing the death toll to four. The identities of the remaining victims have not yet been released.
Commissioner Tisch revealed that Tamura had a documented history of mental illness. He had traveled from Las Vegas across several states including Colorado, Iowa, and New Jersey before arriving in New York shortly before the shooting. His BMW, double-parked outside the building, contained additional ammunition and a revolver. The car was registered in Nevada, where Tamura was a legal gun owner.
The incident sent Midtown Manhattan into chaos. Public transportation was temporarily halted, and nearby buildings were evacuated. Witnesses described scenes of terror as people fled or barricaded themselves in offices. One local shop worker, Mama Bouhenni, said, “This is so terrifying for them, I hope they can go home safe.”
Police spent hours clearing the building floor by floor. The investigation into Tamura’s motive continues.
