President William Ruto has joined other African leaders in mourning the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a towering African statesman whose impact resonated far beyond Nigeria’s borders.
In a heartfelt message issued on Monday, Ruto conveyed his condolences to the Government and People of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, lauding Buhari’s enduring legacy of leadership, integrity, and commitment to Africa’s advancement.
“The demise of President Buhari is a loss not only to the people of Nigeria but also to the entire African continent. His wisdom and unwavering dedication to the liberation and prosperity of his people enriched all of Africa,” Ruto said.
He praised Buhari’s efforts in championing the fight against corruption, advancing regional security, and promoting economic integration across Africa. “President Buhari championed regional security efforts to combat terrorism and was a strong advocate for Africa’s unity and economic development,” Ruto noted.
The Kenyan Head of State fondly recalled Buhari’s 2016 state visit to Kenya, describing it as a milestone in strengthening Kenya-Nigeria relations. He also acknowledged Buhari’s congratulatory message following Kenya’s 2022 General Election, which Ruto said exemplified the former leader’s belief in democratic governance and Pan-African solidarity.
“In this time of sorrow, Kenya stands with Nigeria. May President Buhari’s legacy continue to inspire our pursuit of peace, dignity, and shared prosperity across the continent,” Ruto affirmed.
He concluded his message with a note of personal sympathy to Nigeria’s current leadership: “Please accept, Your Excellency and Dear Brother, my sincere condolences and the assurances of my highest esteem.”
Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023. A former military ruler who returned to power through democratic elections, he was widely respected for his principled stance on good governance and regional cooperation. His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from across Africa and the international community, with many hailing him as a steadfast leader who remained deeply committed to the continent’s progress.
As Africa mourns the loss of one of its influential voices, President Ruto’s tribute underscores the shared respect and unity that defined Buhari’s relationships across the region.
