In a message to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of Morocco’s Throne Day, former U.S. President Donald J. Trump reaffirmed the United States’ recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. The message underscored America’s continued support for the Moroccan Autonomy Proposal, describing it as “the only basis for a just and lasting solution” to the decades-long territorial dispute.
“I also reiterate that the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic Autonomy Proposal,” President Trump stated in his message to the King.
Throne Day, celebrated annually on July 30, marks the accession of King Mohammed VI to the throne. It is a significant occasion for both national pride and international diplomatic engagements. President Trump took this opportunity to extend warm congratulations to the Monarch and the Moroccan people on behalf of the United States.
In his message, Trump also highlighted the strength of U.S.-Morocco relations, noting that the two nations are bound by a “strong and enduring partnership.” He emphasized joint efforts to advance regional peace and security, including cooperation through the Abraham Accords, a series of normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab nations that Morocco joined in 2020.
“The United States deeply values our strong and enduring partnership with Morocco,” Trump said. “Together, we are advancing shared priorities for peace and security in the region, including by building on the Abraham Accords, combatting terrorism, and expanding commercial cooperation that benefits both Americans and Moroccans.”
Trump’s administration made headlines in December 2020 when it became the first major global power to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in exchange for Morocco normalizing ties with Israel. This move was seen as a significant diplomatic win for Rabat and has continued to influence U.S.-Moroccan relations.
“I look forward to continuing our collaboration to promote regional stability, prosperity, and peace,” Trump concluded.
The reaffirmation of U.S. support is expected to bolster Morocco’s diplomatic stance on the Western Sahara issue and further strengthen bilateral ties with the United States.
