Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary (PS) Korir Sing’oei has announced the successful rescue of three Kenyans trapped in Moscow, Russia.
In a statement shared on his official X account on Saturday, September 27, 2025, Sing’oei revealed that two men and one woman had been rescued through Kenya’s mission in Moscow. The three Shaquille Wambo, Pius Mwika, and Derick Njaga are safe and are being repatriated to reunite with their families.
“Pleased to inform of the rescue and repatriation of three Kenyans… The three are safe and on their way home to their families,” PS Sing’oei wrote.
The PS further explained that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively working to address the plight of Kenyans captured as prisoners of war. He thanked Ambassador Peter Mathuki, alongside the Foreign Office and Diaspora Affairs teams, for their role in the ongoing operations.
Kenyan Athlete Held in Ukraine
The update comes amid growing concern for Evans Kibet, a 36-year-old aspiring long-distance runner who is currently being held captive in Ukraine.
In a video released by a Ukrainian army brigade and circulated by the BBC, Kibet pleads not to be sent back to Russia, saying: “I will die there.”
The athlete, wearing a red sports top in the footage, said he was tricked into joining the Russian army and longs to return home to his 16-year-old daughter. His family, shocked by the revelation, expressed deep anguish.
Kibet’s cousin, Edith Chesoi, described the ordeal as traumatizing:
“I am so traumatised. I didn’t sleep at night. I don’t even know what to say.”
Government’s Commitment
PS Sing’oei reassured Kenyans that the government remains committed to ensuring all nationals caught in the conflict are accounted for and safely reunited with their loved ones.
The rescue of the three in Moscow marks a positive step, but the plight of Kibet and others underscores the complex challenges facing Kenya’s diplomacy amid ongoing global conflicts.
