Qatar has confirmed the deaths of three of its diplomats following a tragic car accident near Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, also left two others injured, according to a statement from the Qatari Embassy in Egypt posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The victims were employees of the Amiri Diwan, Qatar’s top government body that manages affairs related to the Emir and the state leadership. The embassy expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and said that the injured were receiving “necessary medical treatment” at a local hospital in Sharm el-Sheikh.
According to two Egyptian security sources who spoke to Reuters, the accident happened when the vehicle carrying the diplomats overturned on a sharp curve along a road approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the city. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, though initial reports suggest the vehicle may have been traveling at high speed on the winding desert road.
The embassy confirmed that both the bodies of the deceased and the injured diplomats would be repatriated to Doha later on Sunday.
The tragic event comes just days after Qatari, Turkish, and Egyptian officials participated in indirect peace talks in Sharm el-Sheikh, discussions that were pivotal in shaping the first phase of a proposed U.S.-backed ceasefire plan between Israel and Hamas.
The Egyptian resort city is also preparing to host a global summit on Monday, aimed at finalizing the terms of that agreement, which seeks to bring an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
This sudden loss has cast a shadow over Qatar’s diplomatic community, with tributes pouring in from regional partners and international allies acknowledging the diplomats’ service and contribution to regional peace efforts.
