President William Ruto has once again raised concerns over the ongoing conflict in Sudan. He warned that continued fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) risks worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis.
Ruto spoke on Friday, September 12, at State House in Nairobi. He had just met with Ramtane Lamamra, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General.
The President stressed that a military solution is not the answer. Instead, he urged both parties to prioritize the needs of the Sudanese people.
“The war in Sudan will not be solved on the battlefield. Dialogue is the only path to lasting peace,” Ruto said.
Call for Dialogue
Ruto called on the warring groups to engage in meaningful negotiations. He emphasized that the people of Sudan must come first before personal or political interests.
During the meeting, Lamamra briefed Ruto on UN-led efforts to secure humanitarian access and reduce hostilities. He also highlighted the push to restore a civilian administration in Sudan.
The envoy praised Ruto’s support, noting that the Kenyan leader has consistently advocated for peace in the Horn of Africa.
Wider Regional Security
The talks also touched on Somalia. Ruto and Lamamra discussed strategies to defeat Al Shabaab militants and stabilize the region.
This is not Ruto’s first warning over Sudan. In February, while addressing a humanitarian conference in Addis Ababa, he asked external actors to stop fueling the war. He also urged international organizations to help find a lasting solution.
Humanitarian Disaster
Ruto reiterated Kenya’s commitment to supporting peace efforts. He described the war in Sudan as a “tragic humanitarian disaster” that requires urgent global attention.
Humanitarian agencies continue to warn that millions of Sudanese face displacement, food shortages, and insecurity if the conflict persists.
