Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) has secured a commanding victory in the country’s latest general election, winning 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats and receiving 65.57% of the popular vote. This strong performance marks a resounding endorsement for Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who led the party through his first general election since taking over from Lee Hsien Loong last year.
With more than 2.4 million votes cast, the results reflect a solid backing from Singaporeans amidst global uncertainties, including looming economic threats such as new trade tariffs from the United States. “Singaporeans gave the PAP a strong mandate to govern,” Wong declared at a post-election press conference. “The results will put Singapore in a better position to face this turbulent world.”
Wong’s leadership has earned praise for his steady handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and his clear vision for navigating future challenges. Despite concerns over rising economic pressures, including geopolitical tensions and global inflation, voters showed confidence in his ability to keep Singapore competitive and open.
The election results come even as the PAP faced growing scrutiny from a more politically engaged younger generation and recent controversies. However, the party not only maintained its dominance but slightly increased its share of the vote compared to the 2020 general election. This suggests that a majority of Singaporeans still view PAP as the best option for maintaining stability and economic growth.
The main opposition party, the Workers’ Party (WP), which had aimed to increase its presence in Parliament, managed to retain its 10 seats. Though the WP drew significant support during rallies and on social media, this enthusiasm did not translate into additional seats.
The PAP’s continued dominance underscores Singapore’s preference for continuity and economic prudence over political experimentation. While critics continue to point out the lack of political diversity and constraints on free speech, the ruling party’s electoral strength shows that many citizens prioritize national stability in an increasingly unpredictable global landscape.
With this strong mandate, Wong is now well-positioned to steer Singapore through upcoming challenges and introduce key reforms aimed at strengthening the city-state’s economic resilience.
