President Nataša Pirc Musar of the Republic of Slovenia has arrived in Kenya for a three-day state visit the first ever by a Slovenian Head of State since diplomatic ties were established in 2004.
President Musar was warmly received at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi, along with Environment CS Deborah Barasa. Her visit marks the 21st anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations and signals a deepening of strategic engagement between Nairobi and Ljubljana.
President Musar is set to hold bilateral talks with President William Ruto, with discussions focusing on economic and development cooperation, climate change mitigation, sustainable development financing, regional peace and security, and reforms in multilateral institutions like the United Nations.
A highlight of her visit will be her role as Guest of Honour at this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations in Homa Bay County on June 1. The national holiday commemorates Kenya’s attainment of internal self-rule in 1963 and is marked with cultural performances, military parades, and presidential addresses.
Further strengthening ties in science and innovation, Musar will visit Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) to officially launch The Conduit, a new Climate Intelligence Hub. The facility is a joint initiative between JHUB Africa and Slovenia’s SPACE-SI (Centre of Excellence for Space Sciences and Technologies). It aims to support youth-led innovation in climate action, smart agriculture, and digital technology across Africa.
This historic visit builds on momentum from Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon’s trip to Kenya in November 2024 and the recent accreditation of Maurice Makoloo as Kenya’s first ambassador to Slovenia, operating from Vienna.
The visit is expected to open new pathways for cooperation in education, climate science, and innovation, while reinforcing shared commitments to sustainability and multilateral diplomacy. As Slovenia and Kenya chart a new chapter in their relationship, the foundations are being laid for long-term collaboration on global challenges.
