Somali Ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, has strongly condemned acts of disrespect toward the Kenyan flag that went viral during a football match in Nairobi.
The incident occurred on Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium during the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary first-leg tie between Kenya Police FC and Somalia’s Mogadishu City Club. The hosts, Kenya Police FC, secured a 3-1 victory, but the match was overshadowed by videos circulating online showing some youth stepping on Kenyan flags.
Speaking in Nairobi on Wednesday, Ambassador Jabril described the actions as “regrettable and unrepresentative” of the values upheld between Kenya and Somalia. He confirmed that Somali authorities are investigating the matter, stressing that such behavior undermines the principles of respect, friendship, and shared sovereignty that define the relationship between the two nations.
“These incidents do not reflect the values of our people. We deeply regret what happened and are committed to ensuring accountability,” Jabril said.
The viral videos have sparked widespread outrage in Kenya, with many citizens demanding firm action from authorities. Kenyans on social media argued that disrespecting the national flag was not just an insult to a symbol but an affront to the country itself.
Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also weighed in, warning that desecrating national symbols is a criminal offense. He cited the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act, which governs the use and protection of Kenya’s national symbols, including the flag.
Murkomen emphasized that national unity and pride must be safeguarded at all times, particularly in regional and international engagements such as sporting events.
As investigations continue, both governments have called for calm and reiterated their commitment to maintaining strong bilateral relations, urging citizens to uphold mutual respect during such occasions.
